French Guiana fielded an illegal player in their match against Honduras on Tuesday July 11, 2017 in Houston, TX.
The ex Chelsea player Florent Malouda was previously cap tied to the French National Team and not only did he play, but he started and was the captain of this French Guianan team who were warned at the beginning of the tournament that if he played, even as a last second substitute that they would be forced to forfeit the game and give the team they played an automatic win with three points and three goals added to their goal differential.
After all was said and done the game was played with Florent Malouda having little impact on the game but the damage of his playing had just begun. After the Concacaf Gold Cup Disciplinary Committee met and made it’s ruling their decision was that French Guiana knowing fielded an illegal player and the game was marked as a forfeit. Additionally, Malouda was giving a 2 game stadium ban and a 2 game Match ban running concurrently, so together. Malouda showing his total lack of give a damn however, showed up to French Guiana’s next game and watched from a box in the stadium. Nothing has been released about his violation of breaking the stadium ban as of yet.
By doing what they did, French Guiana not only gave Honduras a free pass to the quarter finals even though they hadn’t won or even scored a single goal through the entire tournament, but they also sent Martinique home who fought, won a game, and scored 4 goals.
French Guiana has not commented as to why they broke the rules but it has been rumored that they were attempting to make a political statement while bringing awareness to the inconsistency in the rules and the lack of fairness when it comes to FIFA and CONCACAF , but they did so much more just ask Martinique!
