After a strong showing in the Mobile Mini Sun Cup pre-season tournament, loosing the final 4-5 on penalty kicks in the final against New England, the Houston Dynamo had what many considered to be a tough game with little to no chance of winning in their season opening game against Atlanta United.
With a packed house of 20,000+ loud and proud fans and a chip on their shoulders, The Dynamo came out swinging with a fantastic goal by Andrew Wenger in the 5th from Alberth Elis.
From then on, it was all Dynamo in the first half scoring three more by Philippe Senderos in the 23rd, Mauro Manotas in the 27th, and Darwin Ceren in the 4th minute of the 7 minutes of extra time.
It was a rough, physical game with Jaun David Cabezas being subbed in the 15th after a heavy tackle,
and Atlanta was forced to make a sub of their own when Leandro Pirez was stretchered off to the sideline and subsequently replaced with Michael Parkhurst.
Atlanta tried to get back in the game in the second half winning a penalty kick that Miguel Almiron took but missed, hitting the side post leaving Atlanta goalless. Both sides had a handful of chances but the story of the second half was defense which left Atlanta wanting and gave the Dynamo a huge opening day win a big boost of confidence.
Next the Dynamo face the Vancover Whitecaps, at BBVA, with the hopes that this first game wasn’t a fluke and that they can keep the butt kicking going. We shall see on March 10th, but untill then..
